LEED Green Associate

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) professional credentials demonstrate advanced and up to date knowledge of green building design, construction, and operations. The first step toward this is to earn a LEED Green Associate credential. This is the introductory-level credential for LEED, and demonstrates a general understanding of all the LEED rating systems.
The LEED Green Associate credential is offered through the U.S. Green Building Council. Details about the exam include:

  • 100 multiple-choice questions
  • Two hours to take the test
  • You can use a “mark” button to flag the questions that you want to go back and review or answer.
  • The newest version of the exam, LEED Version 4, launches on June 30, 2014.
  • Exam cost: $200 for USGBC members or $250 for non-members.
  • A passing score is 170 or higher on a scale of 125 to 200.
  • The test is offered in both English and Spanish.
  • Are there any eligibility requirements or prerequisites to take the test? No, however the USGBC recommends experience with working on a LEED-registered project.

A LEED Green Associate credential must be maintained by earning 15 continuing education hours within 2 years of passing the exam. Hours can be earned by activities relating to green building, which include education, project experience, authorship, and volunteering (USGBC, 2014).
